In a move to address traffic congestion issues along the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara, President Irfaan Ali conducted an inspection of ongoing roadworks in the region yesterday.

The current road development includes a series of interconnected highways designed to ease daily traffic woes.

Key projects under construction include the Mandela to Buzz Bee Dam highway, as well as improvements to Greenfield, Red Road, and Dumpsite Road.

The initiative aims to create 20 lanes of interconnected highways, linking the East Bank Highway, Heroes Highway, and extending beyond Buzz Bee Dam to Ogle.

These new highways will be built to four-lane standards, enhancing traffic flow and connectivity.

Additionally, President Ali has mandated the installation of an electronic ticketing system on all new highways.

This system will be integrated with streetlights and equipped with cameras to monitor and enforce traffic laws, such as speeding violations and seatbelt usage.

The system will capture photographs of traffic infractions, with fines communicated to vehicle owners via mobile phone and mail.

These upgrades are expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion and improve overall road safety in the area.
