President Irfaan Ali has declared a significant increase in the stipend for Community Support Officers (CSOs), raising it from $30,000 to $40,000 per month.
This adjustment aims to align their compensation with part-time workers’ wages, ensuring fair treatment and equal opportunities across regions.
The announcement was made as part of the Youth Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Programme, which empowers youths in hinterland regions with vital skills and training to foster community development.
By increasing the CSO stipend, the government seeks to bridge the disparity between hinterland and coastal regions.
In addition to the CSO stipend increase, President Ali revealed that toshaos, senior councillors, and community development leaders will also benefit from a $40,000 allowance.
This expansion of the part-time jobs programme recognizes the essential contributions of these leaders and acknowledges their service.
Since their reinstatement by the government in 2020, CSOs have played a crucial role in alleviating the workload in Amerindian communities.
President Ali emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by these communities and ensuring they have equal access to resources and opportunities as those in coastal areas.
