Public servants in Guyana will receive a 10% retroactive salary increase for 2024, effective from January 1, bringing the cumulative wage increase over the past four years to 35%.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced this on Tuesday as part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance public sector wages and benefits.

The President outlined additional measures, including an 8% salary increase scheduled for 2025 and plans to address existing salary disparities.

Public servants in Grades GS 1-6 with at least four years of service will see adjustments to the midpoint of their salary scale, resulting in a 13% increase for some employees.

Those with eight years of service will be moved to the maximum of their scale, with increases of up to 26%.

In Grades GS 7-8, workers with a minimum of four years in their current scale will receive an additional nominal difference of 26%, resulting in an overall increase of up to 11%.

The initiative also introduces compensation for academic qualifications starting in 2025.

Employees holding ACCA certifications will receive an additional $15,000, master’s degree holders $22,000, and doctoral degree holders $32,000.

Further benefits will include improved allowances for the joint services and health workers.

These include increased uniform, risk, housing, and station allowances, as well as 100 annual duty-free concessions for nurses.

The government’s move is part of a broader effort to improve public sector employment conditions, reflecting its commitment to enhancing the welfare of public servants.
