President Mohamed Irfaan Ali greeted the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup trophy upon its arrival at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri on Tuesday.
The trophy’s arrival was marked by a short cultural program, with Frankie Wilson, the assistant director of Sports, representing Guyana at the event.
From the airport, the trophy, under police escort, made its way to State House, where President Ali had the honor of meeting with Damon Leon, the Head of Public Relations for the ICC T20 World Cup.
Accompanying President Ali were various dignitaries, including Guyana’s T20 brand ambassador, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Minister of Sport Charles Ramson, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Cricket Board Bissoondiyal Singh, and West Indies cricketers Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Tevin Imlach, and Kevin Sinclair.
President Ali expressed his excitement about hosting such a prestigious event in Guyana, anticipating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for cricket fans who come out to witness the tournament.
He highlighted the vibrant atmosphere in Guyana when it comes to hosting major events, emphasizing the enthusiasm and support of the local community.
Confident in the West Indies cricket team’s abilities, President Ali voiced his belief that they can secure a third T20 World Cup trophy, especially on home soil.
With the tournament set to kick off on June 1 in the USA, anticipation is high as the West Indies prepare to face Papua New Guinea at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, in their opening match.
As the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy continues its tour, making its way to St. Vincent and the Grenadines before the start of the tournament, cricket fans across Guyana eagerly await the opportunity to witness the action-packed matches and cheer on their favorite teams.
