President Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to combating transnational crime, emphasizing that such activities pose a significant threat to national security and stability.

Addressing officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at the opening of their two-day Annual Officers’ Conference at Base Camp Ayanganna, the President underscored the need for a coordinated and robust response to dismantle criminal networks operating across borders.

He stressed that criminal enterprises profiting from human suffering and instability must find no safe haven in Guyana.

As the nation strengthens its efforts against organized crime, he called on the GDF to remain vigilant in disrupting illicit operations at every opportunity.

Recognizing the cross-border nature of transnational crime, President Ali highlighted the importance of regional and international collaboration.

He noted that partnerships with organizations such as CARICOM and the Regional Security System (RSS) would not only enhance Guyana’s security but also contribute to the broader stability of the Caribbean region.

Strengthening intelligence-sharing and border surveillance will be key to intercepting illicit shipments and prosecuting those involved in criminal activities.

Recent operations have demonstrated Guyana’s commitment to these efforts.

In September 2024, a Joint Services operation involving the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, the GDF, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) led to the largest drug seizure on land in the country’s history.

More than four tonnes of cocaine, valued at nearly US$200 million, were confiscated in the North West District.

With continued investment in security assets and strategic partnerships, the government remains firm in its resolve that transnational crime has no place in Guyana.
