President Dr. Irfaan Ali has affirmed the commitment to upgrade the human and equipment capacity of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to safeguard the nation’s interests both onshore and offshore.

President Ali underscored the importance of enhancing the GDF’s capabilities amidst recent tensions concerning Guyana’s territorial integrity.

He emphasized the need for structural changes within the force to bolster its capacity, despite the nation’s dedication to peace and diplomacy.

During his address, President Ali reiterated Guyana’s commitment to the principle of non-aggression while remaining vigilant and prepared to deter and resist any threats to the country’s security.

In alignment with Guyana’s National Defence Policy, President Ali affirmed the government’s commitment to investing in the GDF’s human and equipment capacity, as well as fostering defence cooperation with allies and international partners.

He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding Guyana’s assets, including its exclusive economic zone, through intensified surveillance efforts.

Chief of Staff Omar Khan, soon to be retitled Chief of Defence in accordance with regional structures, outlined plans for utilizing the $42 billion funding received this year.

Investments will include renovating an aircraft hangar facility at Ogle and commencing construction of a new defence headquarters building.

These enhancements aim to bolster the overall capacity of the GDF.

Notably, last year saw over 150 soldiers benefiting from overseas training and 1500 receiving local training, highlighting the ongoing efforts to strengthen the capabilities of the GDF.
