President Ali outlines plans for AI-powered border security and smart immigration system

Guyana is moving towards an advanced biometric immigration and border security network that will use artificial intelligence to identify potential threats even before travelers board flights to the country.

During a press conference on Friday, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali said that the system will feature facial recognition technology at airports, e-visas, AI-supported traveler risk assessments and enhanced digital monitoring across ports and borders.

According to the President, global security systems are rapidly evolving and Guyana must modernise its infrastructure to remain aligned with international standards.

He explained that under the proposed system, security monitoring could begin as soon as an individual attempts to book travel to Guyana.

“So the new system in the world is not even when you book your ticket. Once you express an interest to book a ticket, that is where the security system kicks in,” he said.

President Ali noted that artificial intelligence will allow authorities to receive alerts on persons of interest before travel is finalised, significantly improving preventive security measures.

“That is how advanced and integrated the global system is now. And that is where we are heading with this security infrastructure and architecture,” he added.

The President said the system will also include integrated customs and immigration databases, enhanced port scanners and AI-driven cargo monitoring designed to improve traceability of goods entering and leaving Guyana.

“Everything must pass through the scanner in and out,” he said.

He added that the broader objective is to facilitate faster movement of people and goods while strengthening national and regional security cooperation through real-time information sharing and digital integration.
