President Irfaan Ali recently officiated the commissioning of a state-of-the-art $30 million marine facility at Nismes, West Bank Demerara, owned by GAICO Construction & General Services Inc.

The event was marked by the presence of government officials, industry leaders, and local residents.

The facility, conceptualized in 2013 by GAICO CEO Komal Singh, includes a dry dock, concrete wharf, and a laydown and storage yard capable of handling heavy loads.

Singh expressed gratitude to President Ali for championing the construction of such a facility in Region Three.

He noted that the project, initially slated for completion in 2019, faced delays as the Coalition Government did not grant approval.

However, under the PPP/C Government, the project received the green light in December 2020, and construction commenced in February 2022.

The marine facility will play a pivotal role in supporting the Government’s Gas-to-Energy Project at Wales, West Bank Demerara.

It is designed to serve as an offloading site for materials and equipment transported by international vessels for the construction of the project.

President Ali underscored the value that the new facility brings to Region Three, emphasizing the significant contributions of GAICO in linking economic development with regional progress.

Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar, who was present at the commissioning, highlighted the government’s commitment to development across all sectors.

He stressed the urgency of pushing forward with development initiatives and acknowledged the positive impact the marine facility will have on regional growth.

The commissioning of this marine facility signifies a strategic investment in Guyana’s infrastructure, supporting economic development and enhancing the country’s capabilities in handling international projects.
