President Dr. Irfaan Ali has taken proactive steps to support the fisherfolk of Rosignol, West Coast Berbice, by facilitating access to finance and announcing a series of measures aimed at improving the fishing trade in the community. Kristin Josiah brings us the story.

During a recent visit to Rosignol, President Ali, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, unveiled plans for the enhancement of fishing infrastructure in the area.

In addition to a rehabilitated wharf, the fisherfolk will benefit from a $25 million storage bond and a concrete tarmac to facilitate the transportation of fish from sea to land.

President Ali emphasized that the construction of the storage bond will commence after the demolition of derelict structures near the wharf.

In a bid to further support the fisherfolk, President Ali announced that Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh will convene a meeting with representatives from the banking sector.

The objective of this meeting is to ensure that fisherfolk have access to small loans, which will enable them to invest in their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

Expressing concern over prevalent issues such as substance abuse, gambling, alcohol consumption, and smoking in the Rosignol community, President Ali outlined the government’s response.

A one-day mental health fair will be organized, providing residents with access to counseling and other health services. Additionally, a mental health hotline will be established to offer around-the-clock support.

President Ali called upon religious leaders to play an active role in addressing the mental health needs of their communities. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Fisherfolk Cooperative members and the government to advance the seafood sector in Rosignol.

The initiatives announced by President Ali demonstrate the government’s commitment to uplifting the fishing community of Rosignol and fostering its socio-economic development.
