President Dr. Irfaan Ali has emphasized that while Toshaos are free to voice their concerns and criticize the government, it is equally important for the government to respond and defend its policies without facing undue backlash.

In an interview with the Newsroom, President Ali addressed recent claims that the government was attacking Toshaos who disagreed with its policies or raised concerns publicly.

He affirmed that the government respects the role of Toshaos and their right to question and scrutinize its actions.

President Ali highlighted that the National Toshaos Council Conference, organized by the NTC with logistical support from the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, provides a platform for Toshaos to express their concerns, including issues related to carbon credit funds.

He stressed that criticism is a part of the democratic process and that the government’s responses should not be viewed as attacks.
