President Irfaan Ali has expressed concerns over the credibility of Transparency International’s (TI) latest Corruption Perceptions Index, suggesting that it may be politically biased.

Responding to questions from reporters about Guyana’s ranking of 39 in TI’s corruption assessment, President Ali questioned the impartiality of the report, asserting that it lacked credibility and might have been influenced by political factors.

He pointed out that the perception indicators used by Transparency International need to be subject to a fair and impartial process in order to be credible.

He argued that if the evaluations are influenced by individuals with political motives or agendas, the results will be skewed.

He further emphasized that independent, fair assessments should involve interviewing all relevant parties, including government representatives, to ensure the accuracy of the findings.

Despite TI’s negative ranking, the President highlighted that other reputable agencies have recognized significant progress in Guyana’s efforts toward improving accountability and transparency.
