President Dr. Irfaan Ali inaugurated the Kaashi Dhaam Crematorium on Leguan Island, Essequibo, the first facility of its kind on the island.
This project is part of a broader investment of $7 billion in Leguan’s development since the government took office in 2020.
The crematorium, constructed by the Ramroop Foundation at President Ali’s request, marks a significant improvement in the island’s infrastructure.
In his remarks, President Ali emphasized that Leguan had been largely overlooked in the past, with limited government intervention.
Since 2020, substantial investments have been directed toward enhancing the island’s quality of life.
One upcoming project includes a solar farm, slated for completion in 2025, which will help power Leguan and support the cultivation of high-value crops, boosting local agriculture.
The newly commissioned crematorium features an upgraded access road, replacing the previous mud track, and President Ali has committed to enhancing connectivity between Leguan and neighboring Wakenaam with launching pods.
Lisa Ramroop, representing the Ramroop Foundation, highlighted the importance of the Kaashi Dhaam Crematorium, stating that it will serve as a dignified final resting place for residents.
