As the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) approaches on November 20, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has emphasized the critical need for world leaders to prioritize the protection and realization of children’s rights.
Speaking at an event to commemorate the anniversary, President Ali stressed the importance of meaningful efforts to create a better world for children and future generations.
He called for institutional and systemic changes that align with the goals of the UNCRC, urging collective global action from all major stakeholders.
President Ali highlighted Guyana’s dedication to upholding children’s rights, noting that the country has made significant progress in this area.
However, he pointed out that these achievements should motivate further advancements to address emerging challenges and ensure a world where every child’s rights are protected and respected.
The UNCRC, adopted on November 20, 1989, consists of 54 articles outlining the rights of children and the responsibilities of governments in safeguarding them.
The convention, signed by 196 countries, has been instrumental in transforming the global approach to children’s welfare and development.
President Ali reaffirmed Guyana’s partnership with UNICEF, the Rights of the Child Commission, and the international community in celebrating this milestone, using the occasion to recommit to the principles enshrined in the UNCRC.
