President Ali Calls for National Day of Prayer in Honor of Fallen Soldiers

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has urged all religious organizations in Guyana to observe Sunday, December 10, as a National Day of Prayer and Reflection.

This solemn occasion is dedicated to honoring the fallen soldiers whose loss the nation mourns.

President Ali emphasizes that the Day of Prayer and Reflection is an opportunity for the diverse religious communities in Guyana to unite and offer prayers for the departed souls.

It’s also a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave men in service to the nation and express gratitude for their dedication to duty.

Earlier today, President Ali attended the funeral of the late Justice Prem Persaud, during which he paid tribute to the fallen servicemen.

He called on the nation to lift these men and their families in prayers, expressing a personal connection as he had spent more time with them in the last three years than with his own family.

The five heroic servicemen—Brigadier (rtd.) Gary Beaton, Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, Lieutenant Colonel Shaun Welcome, and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan—lost their lives during a critical period for the country, while on a mission to support troops on the border and ensure their resupply.

President Ali notes that the deaths of these servicemen have deeply impacted the nation and emphasizes the need for strength in unity, solace in each other, and hope in shared humanism.

He calls on the people to draw strength from one another, share the burden of sorrow, and collectively pray for the victims and their grieving families.
