President Dr. Irfaan Ali has officially launched the construction of the Lethem Regional Hospital, a $6.5 billion state-of-the-art facility that promises to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in Region Nine.
The new hospital, designed with 75 beds, will feature modern amenities, including two fully functional operating rooms, a contemporary emergency room with a procedure space for minor surgeries, diagnostic imaging services, a digital health control room, an intensive care unit, a pediatric wing, and a maternity ward.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare challenges, President Ali announced the arrival of a specialist medical team from Qatar later this year.
The team will work to eliminate the backlog of cardiac surgeries, starting with pediatric cases, as part of an ambitious plan to improve healthcare outcomes.
The facility will also serve as a teaching hospital, contributing to the development of medical professionals in the region.
Brazil has expressed interest in collaborating with Guyana to strengthen healthcare systems further, showcasing the project’s regional significance.
The construction contract for the Lethem Regional Hospital was awarded to CMEC-Sinopharm Consortium.
Once completed, the hospital is expected to transform healthcare access and delivery for residents of Lethem and surrounding areas, symbolizing a major step forward in national development.
