President Ali Announces Stricter Measures to Curb Traffic Lawlessness

In response to the alarming rise in traffic accidents, which have claimed 117 lives in 104 incidents so far this year, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has promised to implement tougher measures aimed at reducing road lawlessness and holding reckless drivers accountable.

Speeding and intoxicated driving have been identified as the leading causes of these deadly accidents.

To combat this, President Ali is advocating for higher fines and stricter enforcement of the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Act.

He has also proposed sanctions for bars that serve intoxicated drivers, with the goal of curbing traffic violations and saving lives.

“We will hold truck drivers responsible,” said President Ali, emphasizing the need for accountability.

He has instructed the Attorney General to review existing laws to identify any gaps and ensure truck owners take responsibility for their drivers’ actions.

The President also urged the Traffic Chief, Commissioner of Police, and the leadership of the Guyana Police Force to take immediate action to fully implement the law, including the suspension of licenses for violators.

In a move to enhance road safety, digital advisory boards will be installed along highways to remind drivers of speed limits.

Nearly 900 traffic tickets have already been issued on Heroes Highway, and more body cameras will be procured for traffic officers to assist in their duties.

CCTV cameras along roadways will also be used to monitor traffic behavior.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall also revealed that new regulations will soon be enforced to ensure truck drivers comply with safety measures and reduce the dangers they pose on the roads.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to improving road safety and minimizing the risks associated with reckless driving.
