President Dr. Irfaan Ali has revealed plans to expand and continue the part-time job initiative in the upcoming year, citing its positive impact on wealth creation and poverty alleviation.
Despite facing some criticism, the initiative, introduced last year, has proven to be a significant contributor to the workforce, particularly benefiting around 15,000 Guyanese, predominantly women and single mothers, at a cost of approximately six billion dollars.
President Ali emphasized that the program not only facilitated the delivery of government services across the country but also injected more disposable income into households and communities.
Recognizing its success, the government has allocated ten billion dollars in the Budget 2024 to expand the initiative, targeting an additional six to seven thousand Guyanese.
During the launch of the initiative last year, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo highlighted that being Guyanese was the only qualification needed to benefit from these part-time jobs.
He also expressed the government’s commitment to continuing the program for years to come.
With this expansion, President Ali aims to support more families, with an estimated 22,000 families expected to benefit from the part-time job initiative.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals of creating wealth and fostering economic growth.
This budgetary allocation underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing unemployment and promoting financial stability among citizens through innovative and inclusive initiatives.
