President Ali Announces Agricultural Developments in Region 6

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has unveiled new initiatives aimed at expanding agricultural production in Region Six, bringing potential economic growth to the area.

The President announced these developments over the weekend, signaling a significant boost to the region’s agricultural sector.

The traditional economic pillar of Berbice, the sugar industry, will undergo further enhancement with the clearance of an additional 5,000 hectares of land for cultivating new varieties of sugar cane.

President Ali revealed that these lands will be mechanized for sugar production, with the Skeldon Estate in Region Six set to benefit from this expansion.

In his statement, President Ali emphasized the importance of modernizing the sugar industry, which includes providing training for workers to adapt to the mechanized processes.

Furthermore, plans are underway to construct new drainage canals in Region Six, akin to the successful Hope canal on the East Coast of Demerara.

President Ali highlighted that these canals aim to mitigate flooding in the region, potentially reducing the risk by up to 70 percent.

Upon his government’s return to office, President Ali reiterated the commitment to reviving various sectors, including sugar, forestry, and other nontraditional industries.

This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering economic growth and development in Region Six and across Guyana.
