President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali conducted a meeting with residents of the Coverden community at ‘Cherry Farm’ on Friday afternoon, focusing on addressing community issues and identifying opportunities for development.
The president emphasized the importance of adopting an integrated approach to farming within the community.
Coverden, with approximately 58 farmers, was challenged by President Ali to collaborate effectively, considering the limited land resources in the area.
With over 200 acres of farmland collectively managed by a farmers’ group, he urged the community to explore integrated farming models for large-scale food production.
President Ali proposed a shared management responsibility in implementing an integrated farming approach.
To support this initiative, the government pledged to provide the necessary infrastructure, complemented by extension services and additional support from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Concerns about water accessibility were raised by farmers, particularly as they expanded into the backlands.
President Ali assured the implementation of new transmissions in the area, with interim measures involving providing farmers materials to facilitate their own water connections.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the drainage system in the area, with over $70 million invested in clearing six canals and ongoing work on a large drainage canal.
During the meeting, a resident requested the construction of a community center, to which President Ali responded positively, stating that once the community identifies a suitable piece of land, the government will support the construction of the center.
The engagement with the Coverden community reflects President Ali’s commitment to grassroots development, addressing immediate concerns, and fostering long-term sustainable development.
