Preparations Underway for Rainy Season, Says Agriculture Minister

By Saskia Warrick

As the end of the month approaches, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha highlights preparations for the anticipated wet season.

With the ongoing El Niño season posing challenges to the agriculture sector, particularly in terms of water access for farmers, the government is proactively gearing up for the upcoming rainy season, typically occurring in May and June.

Minister Mustapha emphasizes that pumps are being procured to ensure sufficient water availability for farmers.

The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is installing pumps in affected areas to mitigate the impact of the extended dry spell.

The prolonged dry season has led to lower water levels, affecting agricultural production and resulting in fluctuations in market prices.

In response, the government has implemented measures to support farmers and ensure that produce meets market demands.

Despite the challenges posed by the dry spell, efforts are underway to address water scarcity and support agricultural activities during the upcoming wet season.

These initiatives aim to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and maintain stability in the agricultural sector.

As preparations continue, Minister Mustapha reaffirms the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring food security for consumers.
