The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has stated that it will not tolerate any attempts to stifle its local government councillors as they work to serve their constituents and advocate for development.

This declaration comes from the Party’s General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, in response to recent issues in New Amsterdam.

The controversy centers around the suspension of PPP councillor Carol Trim-Bagot from the town council’s statutory meetings.

Dr. Jagdeo asserted that the suspension was an attempt by the opposition, particularly the APNU-AFC leadership, to undermine the efforts of PPP councillors.

He alleged that the opposition orchestrated this action to silence their voices within the council.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that the opposition is trying to hinder the positive work being accomplished by the PPP in New Amsterdam and other areas in Berbice.

He highlighted that significant transformation is occurring in New Amsterdam, attributed to the diligent efforts of PPP councillors who are actively engaging with residents to address community concerns.

In the last local government elections, the PPP made considerable gains in New Amsterdam, increasing its representation from just two councillors to six out of a total of 14.

The opposition now holds eight seats, indicating a shift in the political landscape of the region.
