The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) remains resolute in its support of the mining sector and Amerindian communities across Guyana.
General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, reaffirmed this position while responding to recent criticisms from the Guyana Human Rights Association, an organization Jagdeo labeled as anti-PPP.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo stated that mining is vital to the country’s economy, providing significant contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment opportunities for thousands of citizens.
He emphasized that the PPP will continue to foster the growth of the mining industry, as it serves as a major source of income for many Guyanese, especially those in hinterland regions.
Jagdeo also rejected claims that mining activities are harming the environment, asserting that the sector has been developed with environmental safety in mind.
He pointed out that Guyana boasts one of the lowest deforestation rates in the world, despite the expansion of the mining industry.
The PPP’s unapologetic stance on mining and its continued investments in the sector are positioned as essential components of its development agenda, aimed at sustaining livelihoods and supporting indigenous communities.
