PPP General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, responded to what he termed as the new narrative from the PNC-led APNU aimed at undermining the achievements of the government.
In a statement on Thursday, Jagdeo refuted claims made by the opposition leader, Aubrey Norton, asserting that several ongoing projects and promises by the PPP/C government were already considered and pledged by the APNU during its tenure.
Dr. Jagdeo highlighted that the projects in question, including the new Demerara River Bridge, the four-lane Wismar/Mackenzie bridge in Linden, and the new East Bank Demerara highway, were rooted in the PPP’s National Development Strategy formulated in the 1990s.
He emphasized that the PPP/C has consistently delivered on its documented plans for the country’s development.
During a press conference, Jagdeo responded to the APNU’s statement about considering paving the road to Linden, asserting that it is the PPP government that will execute and complete the project.
He stated that the contract for the continuation of the East Bank Demerara road expansion, specifically the Buzz Bee dam phase, has already been awarded, with plans to award the remaining stretch to Soesdyke in the coming year.
Addressing criticisms of delays in project implementation, Dr. Jagdeo clarified that the government does not intentionally prolong projects that are beneficial to the nation.
He argued that, despite delays, having a project underway is preferable to having none at all.
Dr. Jagdeo’s response comes amid ongoing debates between the PPP/C and APNU regarding the credit and responsibility for various developmental initiatives and pledges.
As Guyana continues its path of progress, the political discourse surrounding these projects remains a focal point for both parties.
