PPP General Secretary Condemns Opposition Leader’s Comments, Citing Concerns Over Violence

General Secretary of the PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton during a political meeting at Parade Ground, Georgetown.

Dr. Jagdeo expressed his concerns, characterizing Norton’s comments as taking a ‘dangerous’ route.

Norton, addressing supporters of the PNC-led APNU/AFC coalition, conveyed his confidence in their ability to return to office in the next elections.

However, his statements took a concerning turn when he hinted at potential repercussions for those who voted for the PPP/C, suggesting that he would not allow any form of sabotage, similar to what occurred during the David Granger-led administration.

Dr. Jagdeo, in response, highlighted the historical context of the PNCR-led opposition resorting to violence after electoral losses.

He recalled the APNU/AFC’s call for people to take to the streets in 2020, emphasizing that many Guyanese rejected such narratives.

Dr. Jagdeo cautioned against the call for violence, asserting that those responsible would face the full force of the law.

Despite the Opposition’s attempt to use this narrative for political recruitment, Dr. Jagdeo affirmed that the PPP/C remains committed to providing equal opportunities for all Guyanese.

He challenged Norton’s call for citizens to share negative experiences under the current administration, expressing confidence that the positive initiatives of the PPP/C would garner significant support.

As political tensions rise, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized the importance of maintaining a democratic and peaceful political landscape in Guyana.

The PPP General Secretary urged political leaders to refrain from promoting violence and to prioritize constructive dialogue for the benefit of the nation.
