Teachers in Guyana can expect improved salaries in the coming years, according to General Secretary of the PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Amidst plans by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) for potential strike action, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing teachers’ remuneration as the nation progresses.

Dr. Jagdeo announced during a recent news conference that discussions for a multi-year agreement on salary increases for teachers will commence, starting from 2024 onwards.

He acknowledged that addressing salary increases for previous years would pose financial challenges, indicating that the 2024 budget does not currently allocate funds for retroactive payments.

Recent talks between the Ministry of Education and the GTU ended without resolution, with the Ministry accusing the union of prematurely terminating negotiations.

Despite the setback, the Ministry remains dedicated to engaging in dialogue with the GTU, aiming to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for teachers, students, and the education sector as a whole.
