PPP Congress Scheduled for May: New Leadership to be Elected

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is set to convene its delegates’ congress in the second quarter of this year, as announced by General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo during his weekly press conference at the party’s headquarters.

The congress, long overdue, will mark the election of a new leadership for the ruling party after almost seven years.

Dr. Jagdeo explained that the delay in holding the congress was attributed to several pressing matters of significant national interest that required the party’s attention.

The upcoming event is anticipated to address critical issues within the party and the country at large.

When asked about his potential candidacy for the position of General Secretary, Dr. Jagdeo stated that his decision would depend on the circumstances prevailing when the elections are held.

Dr. Jagdeo assumed the role of General Secretary in January 2017 during the party’s last congress.

Despite transitioning to the position after serving as Leader of the Opposition, he continued in the role even after the PPP’s victory in the 2020 elections.

The congress will provide an opportunity for party members to engage in discussions and elect a new 32-member Central Committee.

The event is expected to shape the future direction of the party and address key matters affecting Guyana.
