On the occasion of the 59th death anniversary of Michael Forde, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) took the opportunity to honour his memory.
Zulfikar Mustapha, the Executive Secretary of the Party, highlighted Forde’s significant contributions to democracy and freedom, making him one of the “Fallen Heroes” of the party.
At the young age of 22, Michael Forde played a crucial role as an activist for the Progressive Youth Organization and was among the leaders of the historic Freedom Marches in February 1964.
Tragically, on July 17, 1964, Forde lost his life due to an explosive package that was brought to Freedom House by an individual disguised as a book purchaser.
Forde’s keen observation and suspicion of the small carton left behind by the individual led him to take heroic action.
He attempted to throw the package outside of the building to protect others, including Former President Janet Jagan, who was present inside at the time.
His bravery ultimately saved their lives.
Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized that this annual observance serves as a solemn reminder of Michael Forde’s sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the party’s values.
Michael Forde’s name remains among the cherished stalwarts of the People’s Progressive Party, and his legacy continues to inspire and guide the party’s efforts in promoting democracy and securing freedom for the people of Guyana.
