Residents of Hackney and Friendship along the Pomeroon River in Region Two are now enjoying access to clean drinking water, thanks to the commissioning of two new wells valued at $22.5 million.

The wells, officially opened last Friday, mark a significant improvement in water accessibility for these communities.

Access to potable water is now a reality for over 500 residents, transforming their daily lives. Previously, many residents had to fetch water from creeks or travel to Charity for clean water.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, expressed satisfaction with the project’s impact during the commissioning ceremony.

She commended the quality of work done over the past few months and years, emphasizing its positive effect on the community.

Gordon Johnson, a resident, noted the challenges faced before the wells were built, mentioning how many had to fetch water from creeks or travel long distances.

Similarly, Motley Boyan expressed gratitude, highlighting that for the six years he lived in the area, there was only salt water available.

He now appreciates the convenience of having clean water at his doorstep, which allows residents to bathe and wash more easily.

Executive Director of Hinterland Services at Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Ramchand Jailall, outlined plans to expand water systems along the Pomeroon River, aiming for ten additional systems by the end of 2024.

The newly commissioned wells at Friendship and Hackney are equipped with solar panels to ensure sustainable operation.

The Friendship well, costing $12 million, now serves approximately 90% of its residents, while the Hackney well, amounting to $10.5 million, benefits about 60% of its population.

The commissioning of these wells underscores ongoing efforts to provide essential services to remote communities, enhancing quality of life and promoting health and hygiene standards across the region.
