Farmers in the Pomeroon Region are set to significantly increase coconut production following the distribution of 3,000 high-yielding Brazilian Green Dwarf seedlings.
This initiative aims to capitalize on coconut’s status as Guyana’s third-largest revenue earner, supporting local and regional demand for coconut products.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha highlighted the potential of the Brazilian Green Dwarf variety to enhance productivity among farmers and agro-processors.
This variety is known for its exceptional yield, which is crucial in meeting the growing market demand for coconuts and their by-products.
Minister Mustapha also revealed that Guyana has imported over 60,000 high-yielding nuts from Brazil as part of efforts to expand coconut productivity nationwide.
This importation is expected to further bolster the coconut industry’s capacity to supply both local consumers and regional markets.
In addition to providing seedlings, the Ministry of Agriculture distributed coconut shredders to farmers in the Pomeroon River area.
These shredders are designed to minimize waste by processing coconut husks into useful materials such as coconut fiber.
The resulting fiber can be utilized for mulching and other agricultural applications, thereby promoting sustainability within the coconut industry.
The initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting economic growth, and ensuring food security in Guyana.
