The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched a nationwide campaign targeting bar owners to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Recent educational exercises were conducted at several establishments along the East and West Coast of Demerara, focusing on compliance with the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Act of 2022.
Police Corporals and Constables led the sessions, emphasizing the responsibilities of bar owners in promoting safer roadways.
With road fatalities linked to drunk driving and speeding on the rise, authorities are now holding bar owners accountable under the law.
Bar owners were instructed to prominently display signs with messages such as:
- Don’t Sell Alcohol to Drunken Persons
- Don’t Sell Alcohol to Persons Under 18
- Don’t Sell Alcohol to Drivers Unless They Have a Designated Driver
These measures aim to reduce the incidence of impaired driving and encourage responsible alcohol consumption.
Bar owners were also warned about follow-up visits by the police to ensure compliance with the Act.
Among the bars visited were Uprising Flat Shop at Wallers Delight, Arvin’s Restaurant and Bar at La Union, and Pearly Bar at La Jalousie, all located on the West Coast of Demerara.
The campaign highlights the growing emphasis on shared responsibility between law enforcement and business owners to mitigate road-related risks and ensure public safety.
