In a significant effort to combat the drug trafficking trade, law enforcement agencies in Guyana conducted a massive destruction exercise today at the former housing ministry’s tarmac on Homestretch Avenue.

The operation involved the Guyana Police Force and the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) and aimed to eradicate narcotics seized as part of the government’s aggressive campaign against drug trafficking.

The Guyana Police Force destroyed a staggering 2,253.60 kilograms of marijuana, with an estimated street value of approximately $2.2 billion.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn was present at the exercise to oversee the operation.

According to Hon. Robeson Benn, much of the destroyed drugs, totaling around 3 metric tonnes of marijuana, originated from regions 5 and 6, as well as parts of Linden.

These matters have been resolved in the courts as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes.

Troy Whittaker, Officer-in-Charge of Police Narcotics, emphasized the frequency of raids carried out by law enforcement agencies.

He mentioned that raids and eradication efforts, particularly in region 6, are conducted frequently to keep the activity flowing.

In addition to the Guyana Police Force, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) also participated in the operation, destroying 512 kilograms of marijuana, equivalent to approximately $153 million.

The destruction of these narcotics represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety and security of communities in Guyana.
