Georgetown, Guyana — Vendors in Plaisance impacted by the East Coast Demerara (ECD) Railway Embankment New Four-Lane Road Project are relocating to a designated tarmac to accommodate the construction.
On Tuesday night, 50 vendors drew lots to determine their new vending spaces, with a deadline to complete the move by Friday.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, alongside ministry officials, led the relocation exercise.
Minister Edghill informed vendors that the tarmac, with spaces for 69 vendors, has marked lots, ensuring each vendor is allocated a designated area.
He encouraged vendors to begin transitioning immediately to allow construction to proceed smoothly along the thoroughfare.
An additional 19 vendors will be selected by the local Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) to occupy the remaining spaces.
Edghill also highlighted that similar relocation efforts are underway for other vendors affected by the expansion along the railway embankment from Annandale to Golden Grove.
Approximately 103 individuals, including business owners and residents with structures near the project area, are impacted. Meetings have been conducted to establish operational agreements for these individuals as the project advances.
The ECD Railway Embankment New Four-Lane Road Project, valued at $192 million USD, aims to upgrade the current two-lane road from Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau to a four-lane thoroughfare, enhancing traffic flow and accessibility for East Coast communities.
