Parag says the Region must rethink education

Education in the Caribbean is undergoing a major shift, as technology continues to reshape how students learn.

Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, says the region must be prepared not just to adapt but to lead that transformation.

Addressing the CXC Regional Education Conference, Minister Parag highlighted the changing nature of today’s learners, noting that traditional teaching methods are quickly being overtaken by technology.

She explained that students are now more visual, digitally engaged, and able to access information on demand forcing a rethink of how education is delivered.

Classrooms are no longer defined by 4 walls, knowledge is no longer scares and the role of the teacher, the student and indeed the examination system itself is being reshaped in real time,” she said.

But while the education landscape is evolving, the Minister stressed that foundational skills like literacy and numeracy remain critical.

To address this, she pointed to measures aimed at strengthening learning outcomes across the region.

These include literacy assessments to ensure students are able to read by Grade Three, along with expanded community-based initiatives to support learning.

She also pointed to the need for updated approaches to assessment, as education systems adjust to the realities of the digital age.

However, Minister Parag cautioned education leaders against rushing into drastic reforms that could leave teachers and students behind.

If we are to rethink education for the digital age we cant pursue sudden heavy handed change that leaves our teachers and students feeling pressured, unprepared or excluded,” she warned.

She says as change continues, the region must be deliberate on shaping an education system that is both modern and inclusive.
