Panthers Secure Comeback Victory in John Lewis Memorial 7’s Championship

In an electrifying final match at the National Park, Panthers Rugby Club orchestrated a remarkable comeback to snatch victory from the defending champions, Police Falcons, in the John Lewis Memorial 7’s Tournament.

The highly anticipated final showdown featured a clash between the formidable Police Falcons, under the guidance of coach Theodore Henry, and the resilient Panthers, led by Larry Adonis.

Both teams had showcased their prowess during the round-robin stage of the two-day tournament, emerging as the top contenders for the title.

In a gripping first half, the Police Falcons demonstrated their dominance, racing to a commanding 12-0 lead.

Scott Garraway and Lionel Holder showcased their scoring prowess, with Garraway notching a try and Holder adding another, both converted by Michael Barrow.

However, the Panthers staged a remarkable comeback in the second half, fueled by outstanding performances from Makaya Smith, Jamal Angus, and Ryan Dey.

Smith initiated the resurgence with a crucial try, followed by Angus, who leveled the scores with another try and a conversion.

Dey then sealed the victory for Panthers with his try, which he converted, securing a 19-12 lead and completing the stunning turnaround.

Earlier in the tournament’s round-robin stage, Panthers displayed their dominance by defeating Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Pepsi Hornets in convincing fashion.

Police Falcons also showcased their strength, securing notable victories against Pepsi Hornets and GDF.

In the third-place playoff, GDF emerged victorious over Hornets with a 17-7 win, highlighting their resilience and determination.

The John Lewis Memorial 7’s Championship, organized in honor of the late army colonel (retired) John Lewis, former president and executive member of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, served as a fitting tribute to his legacy and contributions to the sport.

With thrilling matches and impressive displays of skill and teamwork, the tournament captured the spirit of rugby and celebrated the camaraderie and sportsmanship within the rugby community.
