PANCAP Commemorates World AIDS Day 2023 with “Let Communities Lead” Program

On World AIDS Day 2023, the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) hosted a program under the theme “Let Communities Lead” at the CARICOM Secretariat.

In a gathering at the CARICOM Secretariat, Deputy Secretary-General of CARICOM, Dr. Armstrong Alexis, addressed the audience, highlighting the persistent challenges of HIV/AIDS despite significant strides in medical advancements and awareness campaigns.

Dr. Alexis emphasized the critical role of creating an enabling environment for civil society partners and community organizations to lead the fight against the stigma associated with HIV.

The global community marked World AIDS Day under the banner of “Let Communities Lead,” acknowledging the pivotal role of local communities in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.

This year’s focus aimed to empower grassroots movements, support networks, and community-driven initiatives that contribute to progress in HIV prevention, treatment, and support services worldwide.

Dr. Armstrong Alexis proudly reflected on the progress made, citing a 15% decrease in new HIV infections in the region between 2010 and 2022.

He attributed this positive trend to the united efforts of governments and civil society.

The Deputy Secretary-General highlighted that while challenges persist, including ongoing concerns about HIV diagnosis and stigma, the partnership between civil society and policymakers is crucial to tackling these issues.

The event included symbolic gestures, such as lighting a candle and musical performances by violinist Chie Clarke and staff member Leeanna Allen.

A human ribbon was formed within CARICOM’s compound, serving as a poignant reminder of those who have lost their lives and those who continue to fight against HIV/AIDS.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 38 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2021.
