Pakistan in Control After West Indies Batting Collapse in First Test

January 18, 2025

A familiar batting collapse from the West Indies has handed Pakistan the advantage at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test match in Multan.

Resuming their first innings on 143 for 4, Pakistan managed to post a total of 230 all out, thanks to key contributions from Saud Shakeel (84) and Mohammad Rizwan (71).

West Indies bowlers Jayden Seales and Jomel Warrican took three wickets each to wrap up the innings.

However, the Caribbean side failed to capitalize, crumbling to 137 all out in their first innings.

Jomel Warrican top-scored with 31, while Jayden Seales contributed 22. Extras (22) ended up as the third-highest scorer, highlighting the team’s struggles against Pakistan’s spin attack.

Sajid Khan (4/64) and Noman Ali (5/39) tore through the Windies batting lineup, leaving them well behind in the match.

By stumps, Pakistan had strengthened their position at 109 for 3 in their second innings, leading by 202 runs.

Shan Masood led the charge with a composed 52, while Mohammad Hurraira added 29 before falling.

At the crease, Saud Shakeel (2*) and Kamran Ghulam (9*) looked to build on their lead.

Jomel Warrican, once again among the wickets with figures of 2 for 17 from 10 overs, acknowledged the spin-friendly conditions and emphasized the team’s determination to restrict Pakistan to a manageable total.

“The aim is to keep them under 275,” said Warrican post-match. “I think the Pakistani spinners were the difference in this game so far.”

With Pakistan in a commanding position, West Indies will need a strong response on Day 3, which bowls off at midnight on Saturday.
