During an outreach program at the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital, a team of American ophthalmologists conducted free eye surgeries, benefiting over 40 patients.
The team, comprising American ophthalmologists, initiated the provision of services to Guyanese patients, screening over 100 individuals and performing laser and other eye surgeries on more than 40 people.
The primary focus of the outreach was on patients with diabetes and other serious health complications.
Dr. Vineshri Khirodhar, the Medical Director at the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital, emphasized the prevalence of blurred vision and other eye problems among diabetic patients in the country.
The outreach was timely as it provided an opportunity for these patients to receive corrective surgeries and care from the visiting team of ophthalmologists and surgeons.
Dr. Khirodhar highlighted the remarkable achievements of the outreach, with the American team performing 35 laser procedures and 40 cataract surgeries within four days, led by Dr. White, the head surgeon of the team.
Importantly, all operations were successful, and no complications were reported, reflecting the effectiveness and professionalism of the medical team.
Follow-up visits will be conducted for individuals who underwent eye surgeries, ensuring continued monitoring and care for their recovery and post-operative needs.
The outreach program signifies a significant contribution to addressing eye health issues in Guyana, particularly among diabetic patients, and underscores the importance of international collaborations in providing essential healthcare services to underserved populations.
