The disbursement of the “Because We Care” cash grant has commenced in Region Six, aiming to benefit over 22,000 children across both public and private schools in the East Berbice Corentyne area.

With more than 1.2 billion dollars allocated for the region, this initiative is set to provide substantial support to families.

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, who spearheaded the distribution exercise, emphasized the importance of utilizing the funds for their intended educational purposes.

Bharrat highlighted the expansion of the program since its inception in 2014, noting that the grant amount has significantly increased from the initial 10,000 dollars to the current 45,000 dollars per child.

The program now includes students in both public and private schools across the entire country.

The cash grant benefits every child from Nursery to Grade 10, as well as those entering Grades 12 and 13.

For children entering nursery this year, they must have been registered before April 30, and those entering Grades 12 and 13 will receive the grant later in the year.

NCN News also spoke with several parents who received the grant, expressing their gratitude and sharing how the funds will assist in covering educational expenses for their children.

The distribution process in Region Six is part of a broader effort to ensure that every child in Guyana has the financial support needed to succeed academically.

Minister Bharrat’s oversight and encouragement to parents underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and reducing financial burdens on families.
