Today marked the start of the distribution of a $300 subsidy per bag of paddy, fulfilling President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s promise, with approximately $480.5 million in assistance being provided to rice farmers in Region Five.
Led by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, the initiative is expected to benefit around 1,618 rice farmers, helping to offset production costs and stabilize incomes.

Speaking to the farmers, Minister Mustapha highlighted that the programme is part of a broader national effort, representing a total government investment of approximately $2.1 billion. It is aimed at sustaining rice production, enhancing food security, and reinforcing the resilience of one of Guyana’s most important agricultural sectors.

The government’s commitment to the growth and development of the rice sector has also manifested in a series of other interventions, such as the recent launch of a crop insurance scheme covering more than 6,000 farmers. This programme ensures that for the next three years, these rice farmers will have access to insurance for their crops without having to pay a cent on premiums.
