Guyana continues to face challenges in addressing the HIV epidemic, with over 10,000 individuals living with the virus, as reported during the World AIDS Day 2024 conference.
The National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) shared that 334 new HIV cases have been recorded this year, a concerning trend, especially among males.
Dr. Tariq Jagnarine, Programme Manager at NAPS, highlighted that while most individuals living with HIV are aware of their status, approximately 5% remain undiagnosed, stressing the need for intensified efforts to identify and support those individuals.
Dr. Jagnarine also pointed out that, compared to last year, the number of new HIV cases has decreased, with 580 cases recorded in 2023.
However, the current figures reflect the ongoing need for targeted interventions.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, emphasized the importance of utilizing health programs available to communities, not only for HIV prevention but also for broader health and wellness initiatives, to help citizens lead healthier lives.
World AIDS Day 2024 was observed under the theme “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!” as the country continues its efforts to reduce the spread of HIV and support those affected by the virus.
