Vendors at the “One Guyana Supermarket” located in the Christmas village on Main Street have praised the new initiative, expressing optimism for continued boosts in sales throughout the holiday season.

The supermarket, a recent addition to the annual Christmas village, is offering small and medium-sized businesses a unique opportunity to showcase the best of Guyana’s local produce while attracting new customers.

Mohamed Rasheed, a vendor at the supermarket, shared his excitement about the sales, saying, “So far, it’s been excellent because this is mid-week and I didn’t expect to get these kinds of sales. Items like oranges, tangerines, and lemons are selling fast and are almost sold out.”

Christopher Bukhan, another vendor, appreciated the initiative for farmers, noting, “The sales are very nice, and I think that what they’re doing for farmers is what we need – coming out directly to the people who need fresh produce.”

Claire Richards, showcasing a variety of products like pickle pork, sorrel, and preserved papaya, expressed confidence in the initiative: “We’re here showcasing our stuff, and we trust that next week it will become brighter.”

Gewan Singh, who brought fresh items from Region One, including cassava bread, ginger, and turmeric, added, “Today is the first day we’ve come out, so we don’t know how it will work, but we hope it will be nice.”

The “One Guyana Supermarket” is part of the Christmas village, which was officially opened on Monday by President Irfaan Ali.

This year’s addition provides an excellent platform for vendors to feature local products such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and traditional items like Cassareep, marinade, and spices for making the popular Christmas dish, Pepperpot.
