One Guyana Basketball League Set to Expand Nationwide

The One Guyana Basketball League is poised to expand in its second edition, building on the success of last year’s debut season.

This growth is driven by President Irfaan Ali’s commitment to supporting sports in Guyana.

The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) President, Jermaine Salter, has confirmed that preparations are well underway for the league’s expansion.

The upcoming edition will feature teams from across the country, transforming the league into a national event.

Salter emphasized that this expansion will allow top clubs from all regions to participate, with the possibility of up to 25 teams competing.

Even clubs that do not make the final cut will have opportunities to represent their respective areas.

Salter also highlighted plans to involve junior players in the league, focusing on the development of young talent as a core aspect of the tournament.

In addition, there may be a shift in venue locations for matches, which were previously held at the National Gymnasium.

A parallel project, initiated by President Ali, involves constructing basketball courts in schools across the country, further boosting the sport’s development.

This initiative is in its planning stages and aims to provide accessible courts, whether full or half-sized, at schools capable of hosting them.

Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Charles Ramson Jr., recently held a basketball stakeholders’ engagement to discuss further strategies for promoting and developing basketball in Guyana.
