–Govt pledges assistance

A 65-year-old man and his family are facing an uncertain future after losing their home to a fire in Ogle, East Coast Demerara, on Sunday night.

Sheik Yasseen, who spent nearly 60 years at the residence, shared his ordeal with NCN News, describing the devastation and uncertainty his family now faces.

Yasseen recounted returning from a Guyana Amazon Warriors cricket match when he was alerted to the fire, only to arrive and find his house engulfed in flames. 

The two-storey home was occupied by Yasseen, his son, and daughter-in-law.

While the family is still unsure of their next steps, Yasseen said that government officials have reached out and pledged assistance.

“It’s devastating we don’t know what’s our next move we have no idea, what we know is what she got on is she own, and what he got on is his own and that is all we know right now. So, the vice chairman was here this morning, Minister Benn was here this morning …. they did make offer,” he said.

Meanwhile, neighbor Kevin Seeram expressed gratitude to the Guyana Fire Service as well as everyone who stepped in and prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.

“They called my mom first then me they said fire at uncle sheik house… what I did was run an come out and help to take out my neighbor car that was parked in here and it could have been an explosion we started moving these sets her and there was nothing we could have do here because the fire was already spreading,” he explained.

The Guyana Fire Service is investigating the cause of the fire.
