Observing Interfaith Harmony Week: Insights from Guyanese Religious Leaders

By Samuel Gillis

As part of the global observance of Interfaith Harmony Week, NCN’s Samuel Gillis engaged with representatives from the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) to delve into discussions surrounding religious harmony in Guyana.

World Interfaith Harmony Week, commemorated annually in the first week of February, stems from a United Nations General Assembly Resolution aimed at fostering a worldwide celebration of interfaith unity among member states.

During a courtesy call to faith-based representatives facilitated by the ERC, participants explored the theme of interfaith harmony and identified common denominators that serve to unify diverse religious beliefs.

Prabhu Dave of the Hare Krishna movement emphasized the principle of “unity in diversity” as the foundation of interfaith dialogue.

He underscored the shared belief across scriptures proclaiming the oneness of God as a fundamental tenet that bridges faith traditions.

Sidi Neil Bacchus, Secretary of the Inter-religious Organization of Guyana, reflected on the role of religious organizations in promoting moral values within society.

Bacchus emphasized the collective responsibility of communities, beyond individual households, in nurturing the ethical development of youth.

He cautioned against the negative influence of social media and urged religious communities to be mindful of their messages to guide young people towards discerning right from wrong.

Dr. Alphonso Porter, a Reverend, highlighted the tangible evidence of faith-based harmony positively impacting Guyanese society.

He cited the coexistence of neighbors from diverse religious backgrounds, who share communal bonds and mutual respect despite differing beliefs.

This interconnectedness, Dr. Porter suggested, exemplifies the harmonious cohabitation of individuals with varied religious persuasions in Guyana.

Concluding the discussions, religious leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering harmony among their respective congregations and promoting interfaith dialogue to enhance understanding and cooperation among diverse faith communities.

The dialogue exemplifies Guyana’s commitment to nurturing a culture of religious tolerance and mutual respect, essential for social cohesion and national development.
