OAS Condemns Venezuela’s Aggression Against Guyana, Supports Permanent Council Meeting

The Organisation of American States (OAS) has strongly condemned Venezuela’s increased aggression against Guyana and has expressed support for a meeting of the Permanent Council to discuss the matter.

The OAS emphasizes the urgency and gravity of the situation, describing Venezuela’s actions as a significant concern for regional security and a threat to stability and territorial sovereignty in the hemisphere.

In a statement, the OAS underlines the importance of adhering to the boundary established in 1899 by an international Arbitration Committee, which is legally binding on all parties under international law.

The award is reinforced by proceedings and decisions at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), mandated by the United Nations Secretary-General in accordance with a 1966 agreement.

The OAS notes Venezuela’s unlawful actions, including an illegal referendum on December 3, seeking to annex the Essequibo region.

This action is deemed a blatant disregard for international law and ICJ decisions, with an undemocratic use of democratic processes.

The OAS highlights Venezuela’s previous aggressive actions, incidents, and acts of intimidation before the referendum, emphasizing that these actions not only jeopardize Guyana’s development and stability but also pose a broader risk to the security of Latin America and the Caribbean, as condemned by CARICOM.

In response to these developments, the General Secretariat reaffirms and endorses the request for a meeting of the OAS Permanent Council to discuss possible measures to mitigate the crisis and explore solutions respecting international law and regional stability.

Additionally, the United Kingdom declares its firm support for Guyana’s defense of its territory against Venezuela.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron asserts that the border controversy was settled in 1899, and any attempt to challenge it does not lead to a different outcome.
