Nine Homeless After Early Morning Fire in Louisa Row, Georgetown

By Nakasia Logan, NCN News – December 31, 2024

A devastating fire early this morning in Louisa Row, Georgetown, has left nine individuals, including school-aged children and an infant, homeless after it destroyed two homes and partially damaged a third.

The fire reportedly started around 3:00 AM and quickly engulfed the wooden structures, leaving residents with little time to salvage their belongings.

Firefighters responded promptly but were unable to save the homes due to the rapid spread of the flames.

Eyewitnesses indicated that the fire began in one of the houses on Louisa Row and quickly spread to nearby homes.

The displaced families include two school-aged children, Josh (14) and Anna (15), who are now uncertain about their return to school, as well as their older sister Kellyann Wilkinson.

Nicola Seepaul Petrie, the children’s aunt, expressed that her sister and her children have lost everything.

She recounted that she had heard a crackling sound while in bed and, upon investigation, saw the fire spreading.

Her sister-in-law and father managed to rescue the children, but much was lost. “It was just my small niece and nephew’s passports they were able to save,” she said.

“My big niece lost everything. Everything was gutted.”

Yvette Prescott-Stewart, a former GTT employee, also lost her home and personal documents in the blaze.

The 70-year-old woman, who suffered minor burns during the incident, recalled hearing cries for help from her neighbors before the fire completely consumed her home.

The affected families are now seeking shelter with relatives and neighbors, urgently needing clothing, food, and school supplies.

Those wishing to assist can contact Ms. Yvette’s Godson at 653-8395 or the Wilkinson family’s aunt at 672-1168.

Local relief organizations are also coordinating efforts to provide support.

Minister Kwame McCoy, who was passing by the area, stopped to offer assistance, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
