At the recent Alliance for Change (AFC) National Conference, Nigel Hughes was elected as the new leader of the party, succeeding Khemraj Ramjattan.
The conference, attended by over 285 delegates, marked a significant event in the party’s history.
Before the elections, outgoing leader Khemraj Ramjattan emphasized the AFC’s relevance as a third party in Guyana’s multi-ethnic society.
He underscored the party’s role in maintaining a vibrant democratic process, positioning themselves between the two dominant parties to represent diverse ethnic and mixed-ancestry communities.
Ramjattan highlighted the importance of proportional representation in the constitutional landscape, urging the AFC to continue seeking support from independent citizens across ethnic lines.
This conference, the party’s 8th since its founding in 2005, reaffirmed the AFC’s commitment to its mission.
Ramjattan encouraged members to deepen their efforts and build on past achievements to propel the party forward.
Over 70 individuals vied for positions on the AFC’s 12-member National Executive Committee, reflecting widespread participation and interest in shaping the party’s leadership and direction.
The conference saw both physical attendance from local members and virtual participation from AFC members in the Caribbean, United States, and Region 9.
Nigel Hughes, elected as the new leader, now leads the AFC into its next phase, charged with maintaining its relevance, expanding its support base, and navigating the political landscape of Guyana.
