Guyanese squash champion Nicholas Verway has successfully defended his title at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) championship in the British Virgin Islands, defeating Barbadian Alex Stewart in a commanding three-set match.
Verway demonstrated his dominance in the under-19 category, securing victory with scores of 11-6, 11-9, and 11-2, reaffirming his status as the top player in the region for his age group.
In an all-Guyanese showdown in the under-15 division, Avery Arjoon also claimed gold by decisively defeating teammate Kaylee Lowe in straight sets, with scores of 11-5, 11-2, and 11-1.
The day saw Guyana excel across various categories in singles play, earning a total of nine medals.
Michael Alphonso secured a bronze medal by defeating Seth Thong of Trinidad and Tobago in three sets, with scores of 11-3, 11-9, and 11-8.
In the girls’ under-17 category, Safirah Sumner triumphed over Barbadian Sarrayah Yearwood in straight sets (13-11, 11-7, 11-6) to clinch the bronze medal.
However, Shiloh Asregado faced a tough challenge in the boys’ under-17 division, ultimately falling to Trinidadian Sanjiv Mungal in four sets (9-11, 3-11, 11-7, 9-11), finishing without a medal.
Emily Fung-A-Fat delivered another strong performance for Guyana, securing bronze by defeating Trinidadian Josie Thong in four sets (9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8) in the girls’ division.
Guyana’s success continued with Ethan Bulkan earning silver in the boys under-13 category, Egan Bulkan securing bronze in the same age group, and Thanni Munroe winning bronze in the girls under-11 category.
As the singles events conclude, attention now turns to the team events in the ongoing CASA tournament, which is set to conclude on July 6.
