Newly commissioned Yas School of Inspiration signals bridge of cooperation between Guyana, UAE

In a landmark celebration of international diplomacy and inclusive education, the Government of Guyana, in partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), officially commissioned the Yas School of Inspiration today.

The facility marks Guyana’s 49th Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) space, signaling a massive leap from just 13 recognized spaces in 2020.

The Yas School of Inspiration was today commissioned on Thursday evening at Crane, West Coast Demerara

The $100 million facility was constructed by the Guyana Government in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady and the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and is designed to accommodate approximately 50 children.

In his remarks, President Ali said the school is the celebration of a value system that puts people first, adding that it will not operate in isolation but as part of a foolproof system.

This includes the provision of three specialised buses for free transportation and a governing board that will include the parents of the students to ensure direct transparency and comfort.

“The Yas School of inspiration is an embodiment of that covenant,” President Ali declared. “It will foster understanding in a world that often fears difference; it will nurture potential, where unique minds are not seen as limited, but as wired for wonders we are only beginning to comprehend.”

The head of state noted that the bilateral cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and Guyana has evolved over the years into a dynamic and strategic partnership anchored by shared economic ambitions, mutual respect and strategic foresight.

Recognising that the UAE’s investments in people, education and technological advancement have created an efficient, reliable and balanced ecosystem, President Ali reiterated that this is a society that aligns with Guyana’s development vision.

“This Yas School of Inspiration stands as an example of what is possible when global solidarity intertwines with national resolve and is animated by local heartfelt compassion and concern,” he said.

The President also commended the work of the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for their determination in seeking out and uplifting the vulnerable and fostering a more inclusive society.

UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Her Excellency Reem Bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, expressed deep honor in being part of Guyana’s story. She shared that in the UAE, people with disabilities are referred to as “People of Determination.”

“That determination isn’t only theirs to carry, but it is also ours to follow,” said the minister. “We too must be determined to ensure that we leave no stone unturned in ensuring that their lives are honoured and they are able to be active, productive members of society and above all that they do so with strength and dignity supported and supplied by the larger community. Through this school, we don’t just open for the education of children, we also open doors to a different life for them and also for their parents.”

It features sensory and comprehensive rooms designed specifically to stimulate or calm learners based on their individual sensory profiles. The school is also equipped with devices specialised for communication and language development and comprehensive Arabic and English literacy tools to support diverse learning styles.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vindhya Persaud, and Minister of Education, Sonia Parag also delivered remarks at the ceremony.
