The New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital has received a significant upgrade in its patient transportation services with the addition of a new specialized bus, provided by the Regional Democratic Council.
The bus, equipped with wheelchair ramps, will ensure easier access for patients, particularly those with mobility challenges.
This new vehicle is expected to streamline the transportation of patients between the hospital and their homes, making the process more efficient and supportive for both patients and staff.
Dr. Meena Rajkumar, the Medical Superintendent at the hospital, emphasized the value of this addition, particularly for patients who travel from distant locations such as Parika, Linden, and Crabwood Creek.
Previously, patients would often need to rely on police escorts for transportation, and there was no guaranteed return trip after discharge.
With the new bus, these logistical challenges will be addressed, helping to ensure smoother transitions from the hospital to their families and communities.
In addition to the new transportation, Dr. Rajkumar noted a positive development at the hospital, stating that there has been a decrease in the number of chronic cases being admitted.
The hospital’s focus on treating acute cases and helping patients return to their communities quickly has been effective, with chronic patients being less frequently admitted for long-term stays.
In October 2024, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced plans to transform the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital into a specialized mental health facility.
This move is part of a broader government initiative aimed at improving healthcare services across the country.
